Associations of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Kano State have renewed their call on the state government to immediately operationalise the Kano State Disability Commission, describing its take-off as essential to promoting the rights, welfare, and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
The associations made the appeal during an engagement with the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, whom they commended for providing an inclusive platform for dialogue and listening to the concerns of persons with disabilities.
Speaking on behalf of the associations, the stakeholders stressed that although the legal framework establishing the Commission already exists, its full implementation and operational take-off remain a priority that should no longer be delayed.
According to them, a functional Disability Commission would serve as a critical institution for protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, coordinating government interventions, promoting equal opportunities, and ensuring the effective implementation of disability-related policies across Kano State.
They noted that the Commission would also enhance access to education, healthcare, employment opportunities, and social protection programmes, while strengthening the participation of persons with disabilities in governance and development initiatives.
While appreciating Commissioner Waiya for his commitment to inclusive engagement and his willingness to listen to their concerns, the associations appealed to him to continue advocating for the speedy operationalisation of the Commission.
The groups expressed confidence that the Kano State Government remains committed to building an inclusive society where persons with disabilities are empowered to contribute meaningfully to the state’s development.
